The Southern Maryland “Hawks” Youth Association (SMYA), formally known as the
Western Charles “SkyHawks”, is a non-profit organization located in Western
Charles County, Maryland. The SMYA Football and Cheerleader Program is
solely funded by registration fees, fundraisers and sponsorships. Our organization
generally consists of nine (9) football and seven (7) cheerleading teams with
participants in the age range from 5 to 14. SMYA is one of six Football and
Cheerleading Programs that are active participants in the Charles County Youth
Football League (C.C.Y.F.L). Other Football and Cheerleading Programs include:
Westlake “Bulldogs”, La Plata “Blue Knights”, St. Charles “Bears”, Waldorf
“Wildcats”, and Indian Head “Braves”.
The SMYA organization is chartered to provide fundamental instructions in the
game of football and cheerleading competition in addition to providing for the
physical, mental, competitiveness, and emotional development of each child that
participates. These attributes are accomplished through emphasis on
sportsmanship, team play, self-discipline, integrity, maximum effort, and
participation.
Over the past two, SMYA’s efforts to become an elite youth program on the grid-
iron and in the community is slowly becoming a reality. In 2003 and 2004 the
Hawks only managed to win approximately 11% of the games played. In 2005 that
percentage grew to 30%, with one team (e.g., 115lbs) winning the county Super
Bowl. By the conclusion of the 2006 season, the Hawks organization had won
approximately 43% of the regular season games played, with 4 of 10 teams
making the playoffs and two of those teams (e.g., 95lbs and Unlimited) winning the
county Super Bowl. In addition, our 85lb Cheerleading Squad won 1st Place in the
Charles County Cheerleading Competition.
SMYA leadership and coaches not only teaches the game of football, we also
develop these young men and women to become competitive athletes that excel in
other sports. Such as: National/Regional/State Taekwondo Champions, County
Wrestling Champions, Track and Field AAU Champions, Gymnastics Champions,
and outstanding Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer players.
In an effort to maintain and expand a football and cheerleading program
that
kids
can readily participate and enjoy, we are asking for your support.
Your
support will
go a long way in helping us continue to develop competitive
football
and
cheerleading teams, as well as, defraying some of the
operational costs
and fees
associated with running the SMYA organization.
We are asking that
you become
an SMYA sponsor through your generous
donations. Your
donations will be used
to purchase badly needed practice
equipment and
uniforms.
Expectations are truly high for a great year within the SMYA for the
upcoming 2008 season.
